Happy Friday, y’all and welcome back to week #4 of Friday Shout Outs! This weekend I am heading out to the Adirondacks to crush out a few of the high peaks and take in more views like this one. Anyone else going to be there? If you are, consider checking out our podcast on Real Food Traveling before you go so you know exactly how you can stick to your real food goals while on the road. You should also check out one of these books for your night time reading under the stars…
What’s The Deal WithPrimal Eating and the Paleo Diet?– If you’re super confused about paleo/primal diets and want to learn more you should check out this book by Kelly Schmidt, RD, LDN. Kelly’s book covers all the things from grains, to sugars, to dairy, to eating on a budget, and lifestlye. Not to mention the fact that Nutrition Genius Radio is referenced in the resources section!
Paleo Takeout: Restaurant Favorites Without the Junk– I don’t know about you but one of the things I miss the most now that I’m eating a real food diet is Chinese takeout. The good news is, thanks to Russ Crandall of The Domestic Man we don’t have to miss it anymore! This cookbook is packed full of amazing recipes AND cooking tips and tricks. Stay tuned because Russ will be making an appearance on an upcoming episode of Nutrition Genius Radio!
Deep Nutrition by Dr. Cate Shanahan will always have a soft spot in mine and Sassy’s hearts. This book was one of the catalysts for both of us to continue on our real food journey and an inspiration to break out of the traditional RD mold and teach our clients about whole, real foods cooked in traditional ways. Dr. Shanahan breaks down the science of why a real food diet is better and how sugar is killing you.

“The scale can only give you a numerical reflection of your relationship with gravity. That’s it. It cannot measure beauty, talent, purpose, life force, possibility, strength or love. Don’t give the scale more power than it has earned. Take note of that number, then get off the scale and live your life. You are beautiful!” -Steve Maraboli
“When we seek to discover the best in others, we somehow bring out the best in ourselves.” -William Arthur Ward
@grassfedgirl- Catlin Weeks, author of the Mediterranean Paleo Cooking, has an instagram that looks a lot like ours- food, fitness, and quotes. Check out her website for #pearlandsassyapproved recipes, and essential oil and lifestyle information.
@thespunkycoconut– Holy food porn! Not only is Kelly V. Brozyna killing it with drool worthy food pictures she is also a food blogger at The Spunky Coconut where she posts gluten-free, dairy-free, and paleo recipes. Bonus points because she is also a quote fan.
@plaidandpaleo– Miss Vanessa Jay describes herself as a paleo blogger, hippie in training, exercise dabbles, and essential oil junkie. I’m not quite sure why we haven’t become best friends yet but I’ve been hard core crushing on her instagram food pics for awhile now and I think you should too.
We want to hear from you!
Who deserves a shout out this week?
What is your favorite thing about Friday?!
Saturday was an amazing day! From what I have heard we had people participating in at least seven different states but I’m sure there is more I just haven’t been told about! Here are some of the pictures you guys sent in re-capping the day of good deeds:
I spent my day doing random acts of kindness and it has made me super sappy so I’m going to quickly type this post before I shut it down-
This day had been an incredible day of reflection. One of our random acts of kindness was to call someone just because and I procrastinated the entire day. Normally my choice would be my parents or grandparents but my parents just visited Rochester and I spoke to my grandparents two days ago so it wasn’t random enough. I contemplated for a long time who I could reach out to that would be both surprised to hear from me and willing to spread the love. Finally at about 9 pm it came to me, I should call the person who was the catalyst for my love of volunteering.
Seven years ago I was in a friend’s apartment bored, wondering what I was going to do later that evening and a wonderful human suggested I went to a Colleges Against Cancer meeting. My aunt had recently been diagnosed with cancer so I went in support of her but little did I know that meeting would change my life. That day I became involved in the club. The next year I volunteered to chair the Relay for Life event in SUNY Cortland and the following year I chaired the event and served as the Colleges Against Cancer president. I eventually also served as a committee member on two national groups with the American Cancer Society and later after graduating college I worked as a fundraising event planner for the March of Dimes. Volunteering and non-profit work had become my thing but it all comes pack to that day when one person said hey, come to this meeting with me.
So I called her to say thank you for changing my life. For being a positive influence. For having this infectious enthusiasm that you just can’t help but get on board with..
And today I have found this randomness and infectious spirit has continued.
I moved to Rochester nine months ago. I have two best friends in this world, one from my home town (Bridget) and one from college (Ryan). Bridget, the best friend anyone could ever hope for, moved to Rochester with me. Ryan grew up in Rochester but does not live here but when we moved here he made sure we were connected to his childhood friends. Through his childhood friends I met the people that have become my closest friends in Rochester, the people who participated in this event with me today.
How much more full circle can you get? The people who helped me today I only know because of my friend from college who I only know because of volunteering which I only did because of this one amazing person.
Isn’t if funny how one person can change your life? How one act of kindness, like asking someone to come to a meeting or introducing them to someone else can change their whole trajectory?
I got lucky and I don’t know any other way to put it. My parents are incredibly loving and supportive and my grandparents are the kind of grandparents everyone wishes they could have. My aunts and uncles have given me their unwavering love and support and have never asked anything in return. My siblings and cousins are my best friends. My friends are so amazing that I wonder why they chose me. I have the kind of luck I wish everyone had and that deserves to be shared.
22 Random Acts of Kindness was inspired by someone whose caring, generosity, and kindness I cannot even begin to fathom. Someone so amazing it inspires those around her which is why this event came to fruition. One person’s kindness, which is really just who she is, made today happen.
So for my final act of kindness for the day i write this to say thank you. Thank you to my family for always supporting me and thank you to those who have led me down this path. Thank you most especially to Sassy for always being on the page, for always playing along no matter what insect I want to eat, and for always being someone who I look up to and strive to be more like. And thank you to Bridget, Ryan, Adriana, Michael, Matthew, and Liz for being with me today, I would not be the person I am (or able to function normally) without all of you.
Please let this be a reminder that one small tiny act of kindness can change an entire life. It’s worth it, I promise.
22 Random Acts of Kindness
The day is finally here!
I am so excited the day is finally here! Please remember to send us an email, text message, or social media shout-out (our favorite is instagram) to let us know you participated in the event today and use the hashtag #22raok so we can show my friend just how much her love and kindness has spread!
I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with but if you need some ideas, below is what the Rochester crew is up to today. From the bottom of my heart hank you, thank you, thank you for being a part of this event. Team Nutrition Genius will be forever indebted to you for your continued support of our adventures both nutrition related and otherwise.
Okay that is about all the sappy I can handle. LETS GET READY TO BE KIND!!!!!!!!!!!
Rochester’s Game Plan:
1. Make it your own. This one is to give you time to do the more time-consuming tasks but something that is meaningful to you. It could be helping a friend pack for a move, cleaning their house, babysitting their kids/dogs, volunteering at a soup kitchen, donating to a charity of your choice, etc. I will be getting in touch with the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Rochester to see what they need, let me know it you’re up for this!
2. Stop for a cup of coffee on the way to the market and buy for the person behind you.
3. Meet at the Public Market at 10 am in the parking lot across the street. At the market we are going to give thank-you cards to the local farmers and buy apples for a police station, flowers for a nursing home, and plants for doorsteps.
4. Collect stuffed animals to donate to Children’s hospital.
5. Collect care package items for a soldier.
6. Leave inspirational/kindness quotes on cars in the market parking lot.
7. Give bagged lunches to homeless close to the market.
8. Drop off can ned goods to House of Mercy.
9. Drop off clothes/household items to House of Mercy.
10. Bring chili to the fire department at 704 Hudson Ave
11. Budapub for lunch at 12 pm. Tip generously.
12. At lunch write a thank you card to someone who has helped you recently.
13. At lunch write a “just because” card for a friend you haven’t spoken to recently.
14. Tape quarters to a parking meter.
15. Drop off plants on doorsteps.
16. Drop off apples from market to firehouse on the corner of Monroe/Alexander
17. Stop at Wegmans to tape popcorn to Redbox.
18. While at Wegmans buy lottery tickets to give out.
19. Do something nice at Wegmans- help someone with their groceries, let someone go ahead of you in line, be polite to the checkout person, give someone a compliment, etc.
20. Bring flowers to a nursing home.
21. Call someone just to say hi/cheer them up.
22. Buy someone a drink at the bar.

Hold the Spaghetti, Add the Squash??
You may not know it by my married last name but if you knew me before, you know I am pretty Italian as they come! When my mom (also a Celiac) sent me THIS recipe asking for me to re-create it (allergen free) I jumped for joy at the opportunity. Now, some of you may say that my interpretation is not doing the Italians justice but if you have digestive and health issues you will understand that sometimes we have to be lax on the interpretation of the recipe and make it both delicious and nutritious without harming our bodies. Garlic is without a doubt my [Pearl] go-to cooking addition. The more garlic the better, breath be dammed #lifeofasingledietitian. Ha. I think part of the reason I love garlic so much, beyond it’s tantalizing aroma and the fact that butter and garlic will bring about world peace, is that there is some science behind cooking garlic and how to achieve the best flavor.
