Welcome back to another installment of Friday Shout Outs where we clue you in on all things Sassy and Pearl from the books we read to the blogs we follow, foods we eat, and instagram accounts we stalk, I mean, enjoy. Happy Friday, friends!

What I’m Reading

Brain Maker by Dr. David Perlmutter is my JAM right now. Dr. Perlmutter is a neurologist that focuses on how diet effects the brain. I first heard about him when he wrote Grain Brain (I mean, how great is that title?) and I’ve been following his work ever since. His latest book, Brain Maker, is all about the interplay between the gut microbiome and the brain and how rectifying a dysbiosis in the gut can treat and even cure brain diseases and mental illnesses. Y’all know how much I love the gut microbiome and getting nerdy and this book totally satisfies that need. My only complaint is, don’t you think his name should be spelled Pearlmutter?! #pearltopia

Beyond Training by Ben Greenfield is one I keep referencing. Sassy and I met Ben at the Traditional Foods and Natural Health Symposium in Vermont last year. He was standing at a table with two other dudes and two of the three of them were wearing Tough Mudder gear so of course we had to sass them not even realizing Ben was the next speaker. His topic was Fueling the Ancestral Athlete and his sarcasm, nerdy nutrition facts, and the fact that he gave the talk barefoot made me want to buy his book. Beyond Training covers everything an athlete needs to know from fitness to recovery, nutrition, lifestyle, and the brain and ALL of it is with real foods, supplements, and natural living.

What I’m Following

The Skimm– I read this every morning before I get out of bed. The Skimm is a newsletter that emails you daily with just that- the news. Bonus- it hits the major highlights of world news and is broken down into short and frequently sarcastic paragraphs. This is perfect for someone like me with a lack of patience that wants to know what’s going on in the world but doesn’t have the time to skim (pun intended) over CNN or some other online news site.

@Wonderful_Places- If most of the instagram accounts we reference give you food porn, this one give you travel porn. I LOVE to travel. I love meeting new people, learning about their customs, and seeing new and interesting things. This account is full of b.e.a.utiful pictures of interesting places all over the world.

What I’m Eating

Flaked Coconut– This is such a great snack. Coconut meat and oils have tons of health benefits and it’s super delicious. I like to mix flaked coconut into trail mixes or oats when I’m camping and I eat it plain when I need a quick and easy snack.

Pulled Beef Tongue Stuffed Zucchini– Sassy introduced Team Nutrition Genius to the world of tongue with her Sassy Tongue Tacos and I had to try. I picked up a tongue from my meat guy, Rick, owner of Heiden Valley Farms here in upstate, NY. I recruited six brave friends to dive in with me and it was offaly good. Get the deets here.
