So of course holidays are showing up earlier and earlier in stores, on our Facebook walls and in our COFFEE SHOPS! If you live anywhere other than under a boulder in the wilderness then you know I am about to refer to the PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE from Starbucks and how it’s release date was this week….did anyone tell them it’s STILL SUMMER?!?!
Now, if you know me then you know I am a huge pumpkin enthusiast and would prefer pumpkin pie over a birthday cake on my birthday and any day of the year for that matter. However, I do not see why we must have a start and stop date for a Pumpkin Spice Latte…oh yea I guess it’s called marketing and bringing in the big money!
If you follow me on Facebook (which you should here) then you saw my post this past Tuesday here about Starbucks’ dirty little pumpkin spice latte secret. So dirty in fact that they really do not want you to know what is inside their money making machine of a drink….and the result is a sugar high for you.
Since I have nothing wrong with pumpkin and cinnamon for most people out there I wanted to give you something you could enjoy YEAR ROUND! The recipe below will give you all the joy that Pumpkin Spice Lattes can give you without the chemical storm and sugar high that Starbucks is giving you in their money making machine!
Pumpkins are a good source Vitamin A (via carotenoids) which is imperative for your vision, skin and overall health. It is also a good source of Vitamin C which is great to boost your immune system to stay healthy! Pumpkin also has some other great micronutrients including potassium and magnesium which are super important for brain, heart and overall health. The winning point here is that pumpkin is WAY tastier than any vitamin pill out there…taste does matter! Not to mention the Starbucks drink has ZERO pumpkin in it, what a RIP OFF!
Cinnamon has also been shown in the past few years to be a beneficial nutrient AND it is super tasty especially when paired with pumpkin. While I think the verdict is still out on whether spices are HUGELY beneficial we know that we have been using spices for many years and they do not seem to pose any imminent threat to our health if we are using a GOOD QUALITY spice with no chemical or sugar additives. There is preliminary and emerging research showing that cinnamon may help control blood sugar, reduce blood pressure and act as an antioxidant (reducing inflammation.) So sprinkle away sassy friends!
Alright enough of the nutrition lecture, now time to enjoy your coffee!

- 1 cup freshly brewed organic coffee (My Favorite)
- 2 Tablespoons Milk of choice (I used heavy cream but you can use grass fed whole milk, coconut milk, etc.)
- 1-2 Tbsp. Pumpkin Puree (or make your own!)
- 1 tsp. Grade B Maple Syrup (optional)
- 1/2 tsp. Ground Cinnamon, plus extra for sprinkling
- 1/4 tsp. Pure Vanilla Extract
- Brew coffee to your liking, I used my French Press.
- In a small blender (I used my Magic Bullet) add all ingredients.
- Blend on high for 15-30 seconds or until well combined.
- Pour into your favorite coffee mug and sprinkle with ground cinnamon.
